Benthic invertebrate communities are good indicators of acidification which is caused by acidic pollution from precipitation and acids leaching from the surrounding soils. They are easily suited to biological monitoring as they are common, widespread and easily sampled.
UKTAG requested Freshwater Task Team to develop acidification environmental standards based on new biological methods and additional evidence that has become available since the last round of standard setting in 2006.
This is a technical report that presents the first set of environmental standards and conditions proposed by the UKTAG to underpin the implementation of the Directive. Our report outlines the background to our proposals and describes the role they could play.
